The name of Cambodia reminds most people only of "killing fields" and the murderous Khmer Rouge period. Unfortunately most people also think that Cambodia is still a dangerous place because of war and land mines. Well, they can't be more wrong. War and land mines are history. Nowadays Cambodia is a peaceful country with a incredibly warmhearted and welcoming population. Political stability has improved safety enormously and has turner the Kingdom of Cambodia into a safe holiday destination.
A passport with at least four months validity is required. One month Visas are available on arrival at international airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and at the border crossings with Thailand and Vietnam. Tourist Price Visa is 20$US, and Business Price Visa is 25$US. One photo 4x6cm is required. Tourist Visa can be extended for one month, but only one time. Business Visa can be renewed indefinitely. For extension of visit stay or renew Visas, you may contact a travel agent or, Department of Foreigners, located opposite Phnom Penh International Airport (Tel: 012 581 558, E-mail: visa_info@online.com.kh).
The airport tax for domestic departure is 6$US, and for international departure is 25$US. Just outside the arrival terminal is a ticket booth for transportation into town sits 6km from the airport. Motorcycle taxis are 2$US, tuk-tuk 3 to 5$US and taxis are 5$US. The arrival/departure of the ferry is at Chong Khneas near Phnom Krom, 12 km south of the town. Mototaxis charge 3$US, tuk-tuk 5$US and cars 7$US for the 15 minute riding into town. Passage to or from Phnom Penh is 21$US-25$US one way, and should be purchased one day in advance for the 250 km, 5-6 hours trip on the Tonle Sap river. The arrival/departure Bus from/to Phnom Penh is at the Siem Reap Bus Station. For the 314km, the trip is 5-6hours on Route 6. Passage is 6$US-11$US one way.
There are direct international flights to/from Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Kuala Lumpur, Kunming, Singapore, Taipei, and Vientiane. There are also several daily flights to/from Phnom Penh, and a daily river ferry. By road, Siem Reap may be approached from Phnom Penh and from Thailand via Poipet, by Bus or Taxi.
The local currency for Cambodia is the Riel, witch are in notes only. US Dollars is acceptable currency for transactions in Cambodia. The current exchange rate is US$1=Riel 4,000.00. You can exchange your origin country currency and traveler cheques at banks and hotel at board rates. You may wish to change at money changers found in the city where you can bargain for a better rate.
Most major Credit Cards are accepted in Hotel and some Restaurants with a commission fee charge. You can also obtain cash at banks with your Visa or Master Card with a commission of 5% or a minimun charge of 5$US per transaction. You are required to bring your passport for card owner identification.
You may use your personal mobile phone number in Cambodia to make and receive calls with you applying a roaming service at your origin country or purchase a stored value SIM Card with a local number. The Cambodia Country Calling Code is 855. You can get Internet Wifi in most international hotels or at least a workstation connected to Internet. There are also a lot of Internet Cafés.

The Cambodia Daily (daily) and Phnom Penh Post (daily) are the local English newspapers, and Cambodge Soir (weekly) is the local French language newspaper.
Cambodia has four seasons: November to February is cool and dry, March to May is hot and dry, June to August is hot and wet and September to October is cool and wet. The hottest day of the hot and dry season climb above 35°C. During the cool and dry season the thermometer is down as low as 20°C.
